Name: *Nirmalan Background: Sri Lankan Tamil Current Location: Papua New Guinea — for over 6 years Risk of returning: Arrest, torture, death Needs: Private sponsorship to Canada, including CAD $17,000 or AUD $18,500 in fundraising His Story Nirmalan is a young Tamil man from the north of Sri Lanka. As a member of the minority ethnic Tamil group, he has endured loss, torture and devastation that is unimaginable to most. During the Sri Lankan civil war, Nirmalan’s father was killed. In 2009, despite the end of the civil war, Nirmalan was taken prisoner for suspected ties to the LTTE. For four years he was imprisoned, assaulted and tortured, inflicting wounds that still cause him pain to this day. When Nirmalan got out of detention he knew that he would never be safe in Sri Lanka. He fled his home, thinking that if he made it to Australia he would find freedom. Instead, he was caught in a sudden refugee policy change and placed in detention again – this time by the Australian Government and in horrific conditions on Manus Island, Papua New Guinea. Nirmalan is now held in indefinite detention, stranded without hope in immigration limbo — even though he has been assessed as a valid refugee. He has no freedom of movement, cannot work or attend school, and worries for his mother back in Sri Lanka. Despite these conditions, Nirmalan has been able to express his deep love of nature through wood carvings. He has hopes of working one day in agriculture where he can continue his love of the natural world. A New Start Nirmalan was not accepted under the US refugee resettlement program, but he has one final chance for freedom: the Private Sponsorship of Refugees program in Canada. To support his application to Canada, the government requires our non-profit partner, Community Matters, to hold $17,000 in trust for Nirmalan to support his first year of resettlement. Please contribute today so we can lodge his application and give Nirmalan the chance to build a new life in Canada — he’s waited long enough! We already have our sponsors in place, but before we can submit his application, we need to confirm to the Canadian government that we have funds to support Nirmalan’s first 12 months of life in Canada (CAD$17,000). Your donation will contribute to Nirmalan’s living expenses for the first year, including: + 12 months of income + housing + food staples + startup costs + household needs + furniture + clothing Every dollar we raise (minus any fees collected by Chuffed) will be held in trust by Community Matters Toronto and go directly towards Nirmalan’s support. When he arrives in Canada, the funds will be disbursed to him immediately, as per the guidelines established by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Who are we?
